Valentin Declo

Bio

Valentin Declois a lecturer in Greek language and literature at the University Lumière Lyon 2 and a member of the HiSoMA laboratory (History and Sources of the Ancient Worlds). His research focuses on the intellectual environment of Greek Sophists under the Roman Empire, with a particular interest in the links between education, poetry and philosophy in Antiquity.

In 2023, he published a new French translation of the Life of Apollonius of Tyana by Philostrate (Les Belles Lettres), a fascinating text recounting the initiatory journey of a legendary Pythagorean philosopher, told by a Greek sophist from the 3rd century.

More recently, he has focused on exploring the contributions of generative artificial intelligence in the analysis and understanding of ancient literary and rhetorical practices, thus combining classical research and contemporary technologies to renew our reading of ancient texts.

Residency project

During the philosophy residency at La Rocabella, Valentin Declowill offer an original workshop combining ancient thought and artificial intelligence tools, to help participants explore new philosophical narrative axes.

By relying on the abilities of generative AIs to produce variations in style, to simulate dialogues or to reformulate complex arguments, it will support residents in an experimental approach: how to make a theme as timeless as the search for meaning interact with 21st century tools?

Valentin will show how AI can be used as a thought trigger, by confronting ideas with unexpected formulations, by replaying philosophical disputes in the manner of the Ancients, or by suggesting forgotten angles of analysis. Far from passive use, the objective will be to take control of the machine, to divert it as a tool for creation, argument or philosophical fiction.

An experience at the crossroads of philology, rhetoric and contemporary imagination.
