Luke James
Bio
Luke is a sculptor whose work explores the poetry of everyday gestures. Through sculptural assemblies, he orchestrates an unstable symbiosis between familiar micro-actions and domestic materials. Biting into an apple, hanging out the laundry or throwing a die become starting points for deconstructing these trivial moments and questioning their place in our collective representations.
His approach, which is both minimal and grounded, plays with the properties, history, and narration of materials, creating works that oscillate between lightness and fragility. Through an aesthetic that is sometimes arid, he seeks to shake the obvious, revealing a poetry hidden in what seems unchangeable.
Luke calls for sculpture that is direct and accessible, in reaction to the excessive sophistication of contemporary capitalism. His works, at the border between stability and imbalance, invite us to rethink our relationship to space and time.
Residency project
Luke wants to explore the liminal space between land and sea, capturing what's not exactly on one side or the other. Inspired by the title of the residency, he wonders about the flows and returns of objects — like a bottle into the sea carrying a message — and about the transformations of terrestrial materials when they plunge into water.
Through his sculptures, Luke seeks to create a poetic dialogue between these two worlds, playing on their interactions and on the changing boundaries that separate them. To do this, he will glean objects found around the villa's gardens and the shores below, transforming these curiosities into works using materials such as ceramics, wax and glass.
His project aims to freeze movement in hybrid forms, revealing the beauty of the details, strangeness and stories that this space between two edges carries.
